CHANGES IN SALIVARY CORTISOL LEVELS DURING SHORT-LASTING PRE- AND POST-CONTEST PERIOD IN MALE WRESTLERS

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2009, Vol 25, Issue 6

Abstract

Background. Studies on changes in cortisol levels in biological fluids; blood, saliva or urine are useful for estimation psychological or physical stress in humans. This study aimed to evaluate the behaviour of salivary cortisol prior to wrestling contests and during short-term post contests recovery.Material and methods. Polish wresters (n=16) were examined during various occasions, once at rest condition, and twice during two-day Tournament. Saliva samples for determination of cortisol levels were taken at rest, before routine training session (-5 minutes), and before (-20, -5 min) and after (+5, +20 min) the first eliminatory (on the first day), and first final (on the second day) contest of an International Wrestling Tournament. The hormone was measured with using commercial kit.Results. The mean basal cortisol level was significantly (p<0.005) lower than those recorded at all time points during competition. Post-contests cortisol levels within +5 and +20 min. were significantly (p<0.05) higher compared with those pre-exertions. Within short lasting period before contests, from -20 to -5 min, mean cortisol increased significantly (p<.0.01). Cortisolism expressed as area under curve (-20, -5, +5, +20) was significantly higher (p<0.01) on the second day of competition. Peak of cortisol appeared at +20 min of recovery.Conclusions. Anticipation of an official, athletic combat is the main reason for higher cortisol prior to competition than to routine training. During short-lasting period directly prior to contests cortisolism elevated with time-to-event. We assume, that stronger anticipation of final combat against opponents of higher skills resulted in higher pre-event mean cortisol.
