COGNITIVE APPROACH TO SIMILARITY IN WORD BUILDING IN POLISH AND SERBIAN NAMES OF BIRDS

Abstract
This article concentrates on the cognitive approach to the similarity in word building. Having analyzed various researches into the so-called associative (onomasiological) morphological derivatives, the author is referring to Waszakowa’s findings as to the possibility of investigating the word building in the cognitive linguistics aspect. The purpose of the analysis of the gathered material is to indicate a way of studying the similarity in the word building using the cognitive approach. The gathered material – Polish and Serbian names of birds – is divided into groups based on the semantic meaning. The meaning of the derivatives, formed by paraphrasing that shows the morphological meaning of the nouns, lets the author create a classification of nouns based on the comparison that demonstrates the similarity of bird species to people, different animals and different kinds of birds.
