Cognitive anthropology is the study of human cognition in cultural and cross-cultural contexts. There are four basic categories of work done in cognitive anthropology − semantics, knowledge structures, models and systems, and discourse analysis. Cognitive anthropology applies the principles of cognitive literary theory and literary anthropology to the interpretation of fiction. Galyna Pahutyak is the famous and original Ukrainian writer, undoubted master of the modern Ukrainian fiction, a Shevchenko Award winner (2010). Writer made his literary debut in 1982 (novel «The Children»). It was followed by «Master» (1986), «Access to the garden» (1989) and «Mustard seed» (1990). In her works, in a few lines, in one paragraph she creates images of an extraordinary strength and brightness, appeals to the individual and collective past and existence, blurs borders between the self and others’ world, creates the alternative (in particular artistic) world, forms the special poetics of frontier manifesting in the work on the level of narrative organization, peculiar system of images and intellectual ideas. Archetypes, symbols, mysticism, concepts, philosophy play a leading role in her works. The objective of our research work is to analyze semantics of concept of death. The functioning of mythological elements as the basis of the creation of concept of death, psychological characters and reception horizon of reader’s expectations are analyzed. Concept of death is based on archetypal ideas about the afterlife and the transition to it fnd beliefs about death as a mandatory element of the life circle changes. Fear of death has infantile nature and communicates with hypnophobia and nyctophobia, which is caused by meetings with infernal creatures of the world.
