Journal Title: Onkologia Polska - Year 2008, Vol 11, Issue 2
Abstract
Introduction: The study concerns the problem of coping with stress among the mothers of children with cancer, who differ between themselves by the number of resources accor-ding to Hobfoll's Conservation of Resources Theory. Objectives: The assessment of doping with stress among mothers, depending on number of resources and the meaning of life level. Ocena sposobów radzenia sobie matek ze stresem, związanym z chorobą nowotworową dziecka w zależności od ilości zasobów i poziomu poczucia sensu życia. Material and methods: 30 mothers (aged 26-51 years), whose children with cancer stay-ed at the Department of Pediatric Onco-/Hematology in Lublin, entered the study on condition that they experienced of their children due to their worse well-being, including life threatening. The mothers filled in the set of questionnaires and tests (on general demo-graphic information of themselves and their children, Coping Inventory for Stresful Situations - CISS - and Hobfoll’s list of resources). Results: The statistical analysis showed tendency of the main effect of resources' variable (F(1.26)=3.96; p=0.057). The people with the smaller number of resources use the emotio-nal way of coping with stress more often (M=56.75). Moreover, this way correlated nega-tively with self-confidence (r(28)= -0.363; p<0.05), general number of resources (r(28)= -0.379; p<0.05), and the level of personal resources (r(28)= -0.383; p<0.05). Conclusions: The mothers who chose the emotional way of coping with stress declare a smaller number of resources. The mothers with the larger number of personal resources who focus on emotions, have the ability to change the way of coping stress into focusing on tasks after decreasing the level of negative tension. They can also better cope with the illness of their children. Studying personal resources should be used in more effective helping people coping with their children's illness.
