Correlation of root and derived verbs in lexical and lexical- grammar aspects

Journal Title: Scientific journal «International Journal of Philology» - Year 2014, Vol 1, Issue 206

Abstract

The article focuses on the semantic differences between simple and derived verbs formed by the process of deverbation. The verbs can be compared on different levels: structural, semantic and functional. The most problematic issues in verbal semantics are semantic and functional. It is essential not only to identify the differences between the verbal semantic structures, but also similarities. It makes possible to determine the range of semantic differences and divisions in the area of synonymy of simple and derived verbs. Inseparable prefixes in German influence the meaning of the root so that the semantic relationship between the primary and secondary meanings may be partially or completely semantically broken. In both cases we deal with a different measure of lexical-semantic differences between simple and derived verbs. Due to the deverbation a derived verb can change its denotative meaning partially or completely. If a denotative meaning changes completely it leads to the transposition of a verb to another lexical-semantic field. Changes in the lexical meaning of a deverbative word cause changes in its subcategorial meanings. Simple and derived verbs may differ in subcategorial features. Thus, there is a formation of oppositions of subcategorial features such as verb paradigms of number, person, mood, aspect, and tense. Lexical and subcategorial changes of derived verbs which have inseparable prefixes influence the nature of syntactic valency. Besides, there is a limit of maximum and minimum semantic differences of simple and derived verbs in the language system. Minimal semantic differences are typical of synonymy. In this area practically there are no any changes. This comparative analysis of simple and derived verbs needs further research in terms of conceptual semantics.
