Correlations between Democratization and the Introduction of Free Market Economy

Abstract
The paper seeks to identify correlations and relationships, if any, between democratic transformation (transition) and the introduction of free market mechanisms. The author discusses the nature of processes involved in democratization, based on an analysis of the three global waves of democratization. Most attention is given to the recent democratic transition in Central and Eastern Europe, with a special focus on the Baltic States: Latvia, Estonia and Lithuania.
