Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 45
Abstract
Most of the Ottoman Sultans who had the characteristics of patronising craftsmen and poets of course, dealt with art in general and poetry privately. One of these sultans was III. Selim who reigned in 18th century. He dealt with music and calligraphy. He was also known to be close to Sheikh Galib who was one of the leading poets of Classical Turkish Poetry. This poet-sultan had a reorganized Diwan in which his poems written with the nickname “Ilhami” were included. In this study, we try to reveal how Ilhami described winter as a season, which elements about winter he mentioned and which traditions about winter he used in his poems. Also, by means of the ode with radif “lahana”, a winter vegetable, we also examine the reflections of two big courtteams, lahanacılar and bamyacılar, in the imaginary world of the poet-sultan. So, we try to draw attention to how winter was described in Classical Turkish Poetry in the poet-sultan’s eyes and how two courtteams were mentioned in Diwan poetry from the point of view of a football supporter.
