Economic accessibility of alcohol and its harmful health consequences

Abstract
Introduction. The aim is to assess relationship between economic accessibility of alcohol and its harmful health consequences in Poland. Material and methods. Regression of time series of economic accessibility of vodka (number of bottles per average monthly wage) on first hospitalizations due to alcohol mental disorders: 1956– 2003 and on liver cirrhosis mortality among men in their productive ages: 1963–2002. Procedure of autoregression was applied to eliminate impact of autocorrelation in time series. Results. Statistically significant relationship between economic accessibility of alcohol and selected harm indicators was found. Linear relationship model explains 25% of variability in first time psychiatric hospitalizations due to alcohol and 23–26% of variability in liver cirrhosis mortality among men in their productive ages.
