El revisionismo estético en Kerry James Marshall
Journal Title: Revista Académica Estesis - Year 2025, Vol 1, Issue 18
Abstract
This article examines the artistic practice of Kerry JamesMarshall, exploring how his work redefines African Amer-ican representation within Western art through what istermed here as “aesthetic revisionism.” Born in Alabamain 1955, Marshall has both witnessed and experienced theeffects of racial violence and segregation, experiences thatshape his commitment to centering Black figures promi-nently within the art canon. The concept of a “conceptualnegative,” present in works like De Style, inverts tradition-al visual codes, offering a subversive critique by replac-ing historically white figures with Black subjects, creatingspace for a “visual decolonization.” Drawing from otherartists such as Rembrandt, Marshall develops a uniqueaesthetic that reimagines spaces and brings renewedsignificance to African American identity and culture.Through the lens of Stuart Hall’s representation theory, theanalysis extends to the work of other contemporary artists, like Titus Kaphar and Kehinde Wiley, who similarly employvisual strategies to challenge and expand the art field. Indoing so, these creators collectively reconstruct an inclusiveWestern art landscape, proposing a framework where theAfrican American experience becomes a fundamental partof contemporary visual discourse.
