Electronic Payments and Social Inclusion

Abstract
Technological developments have revolutionized payment systems and the dynamics they operate with. They have contributed to the development of modern payment platforms that are more reliable, integrated, secure and cost-effective payments solutions. The electronic nature and increased adoption of such systems are pushing cash payments to lesser usage. This article provides a short overview of such paradigm shifts, and some perceived potential benefits. It also explores the role of modern identity management systems in supporting advanced levels of security, and relates this to a pilot project being carried out in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to enhance social inclusion in its federal Wages Protection Systems (WPS).
