Elementary deviations of modern English postcolonial fictional text graphic arrangement

Abstract

The article highlights elementary deviations of graphic arrangement of modern English postcolonial fictional texts mirroring the general trend of contemporary English authors to employ the visual way of text representation as well as the overall increase of graphic and paragraphemic elements in fictional texts. Classic graphic arrangement of the text on the page, layout, micro- and macro- segmentation, traditional use of punctuation, standard font and color design of the text are viewed in this article as traditional and typical following the theoretical works of the linguists and are interpreted as an unmarked member of the stylistic opposition. Whereas a part of the text containing any graphic-phonetic and/or paragraphemic deviations and occasionalisms is viewed as a stylistically marked member of the opposition and presents interest to the current research. Elementary cases of graphic arrengement of the text deviations are distinguished in this article as those marking the title of the text or its parts, quotes, references, “a text inside of a text”. Such deviations indicate “alien” elements in the text, allusions and references. Furthermore, such graphic heterogeneity is designed not to separate the main text and its elements into different text components but rather to harmonize them within mcro- and macro-contexts fascilitating the integrated reading of the text. The current research also presupposes the translation of connotations and implicit meanings by elementary deviations of graphic text arrangement of texts which has successfully been proven in the course of the factual text material analysis
