Abstract
The object of this article – a novel by modern Russian writer Anton Ponizovsky “Prince incognito”, which was published in 2017. The article focuses upon the defining of the specificity of author’s conception. A way of gaining the aim of the article is an analysis of the semantics of the elements of fire and water in the novel. These elements have the key role in several levels of the novel. In intertextual level – their significance sets on the verse by the poet of XVIII century N.A. Lvov, which are repeated in the text several times. Water and Fire are in straggle in this verse. But no one wins. On the plot level “Prince incognito” is a novel about the attempted of arson of a hospital psychiatric unit and its prevention. So these elements have key role on this level too. The richest is the semantics of the elements of fire and water at the level of the images of the main characters of the novel, Gasja (from surname Garsija) and Jivan. For Gasja fire is a trickster, game fire cheers him. Fire for him is the way to free themselves from his clumsy sedentary body and show the world how good he really is. Fire for Gasja is the channel of communication. It's the force that should change the world: destroy the world right and make it impossible, such as fairy tale. Fire for him is a sign of Regal power, grandeur. But such a fire he could not create. The semantics of water is not so rich in the novel, but it is important too. It is water of sea – the way of Gasja to his coronation. But water has more negative semantics nor positive in this novel. This is chlorinated water in the pool, which delivers the suffering to Gasja. This is deep dark water, to which Jivan plunges in his mirage. Both elements in the novel, as the characters of heroes are ambivalent. But neither one is not allowed to win, as none of the heroes achieve the goal. This final reflects the author's pessimistic concept of reality.
