Endovascular treatment of varicocele

Abstract
<b>Aim. </b>To evaluate effectiveness of treatment of male varicocele with endovascular embolisation with coils and sclerotheraphy with aetoxysclerol.<br><b>Material and methods.</b> A retrospective study was conducted in 424 pacients (age range 18-40) with varicocele treated in our department between May 2000 and May 2010. Selective catheterization, phlebography and embolization of the testicular vein were performed from right femoral vein access. 2% aetoxysclerol was injected into the testicular vein and coils were introduced to the point where stasis of the blood flow was achieved. Follow-up evaluation was based on US Doppler examinations and a questionnaire assessing pain and pregnancy.<br><b>Results. </b>Technical success was achieved in 95% patients (403/424). Follow-up examination (mean 24 months) was performed in 316 patients and showed good long term result of the treatment in 305 patients. Recurrence of varicocele was observed in 11 (3.5%) cases. Of 136 patients undergoing the procedure because of infertility, 72 came for the follow-up visit, 42 of them reported pregnancies in their partners.<br><b>Conclusions.</b> Endovascular treatment of varicocele with coil embolization and sclerotisation is a successful procedure associated with low complication and recurrence rate.
