Theoretical approaches to the formation of the term “competitiveness” have been considered. In modern management, this term is regarded as a key one, because change management in a competitive environment is characterized by a certain level of business entities development and a corresponding level of the competitive environment. An evolutionary analysis of the term “competitiveness” have been carried out. Despite numerous scientific investigations, the term still requires a deeper analysis due to its evolving nature and cyclical patterns of economic and political processes. Similarly, its interpretations, as well as the analysis in accordance with a chosen economic object, have to be understood during the research. The causes of transformation of the term “competitiveness” have been revealed. The author has described a relationship between competitiveness and a social component of profit. This social component plays a significant role in attaining strategic goals of a firm based on the principles of a complex approach in order to maximize profit. Results of defining the term “competitiveness” have been summarized. The author has presented his own definition. The relationships between the term and the “theory of intellectual leadership” as well as the “theory of value” have been revealed. Having explored different theories, the author has determined that their wise combination will assist in better understanding of the enterprise competitiveness. Further directions for researching the term “competitiveness” have been offered. The author notes that the competitiveness should be measured in terms of financial and economic parameters on the basis of statistical and accounting reports. That data have to reflect the efficiency of the resource use and accumulation over a chosen period, taking into account actual perspectives (technological, intellectual, economic, etc.). That is why, market incentives and stimuli should be considered in order to assort the interests of competitors.
