Fibrinolytic activity in obesity
Journal Title: Postępy Nauk Medycznych - Year 2011, Vol 24, Issue 9
Abstract
Aim of study. To assess the fibrinolytic activity by measuring plasma levels of fibrinogen, tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and its inhibitor PAI-1 in subjects with normal body weight and obese patients without associated cardiovascular disease.Material and methods. The study group consisted of 80 subjects: 40 women and 40 men aged 27-46 years without cardiovascular disease. Subjects were divided into two groups similar in terms of gender and age. The first – the control group were people with a BMI below 24.9 kg/m2, and the other with a BMI above 30 kg/m2. In all patients, levels were determined: total cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL-cholesterol, fibrinogen, tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA) and its inhibitor (PAI-1) were determined. There were no differences in total cholesterol and triglycerides concentrations between the two groups. the highestHDL-cholesterol levels was observed in women in the control group. Significantly higher concentrations of fibrinogen and t-PA antigen levels were found in obese compared with the control group (p < 0.01), and no significant differences in the concentration of PAI-1 antigen between the study groups were notice.Conclusions. In obese subjects an impaired states of plasma fibrinolytic activity was recognized.
