Formulation and evaluation of sustained release microspheres of acetazolamide by solvent evaporation technique

Journal Title: Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research - Year 2009, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

Sustained release microcapsules of acetazolamide, a short half life carbonic anhydraseinhibitor, was developed to reduce the frequency of drug administration, ease of doseadjustment and improve patient compliance. In this study, sustained releasemicrocapsules of acetazolamide was prepared by solvent evaporation techniques usingEudragit RL/RS as polymer and particle size, encapsulation efficiencies and in vitrorelease of the fabricated microcapsules were evaluated. The results showed that theencapsulation efficiencies were desired for all the formulations of microcapsulesdeveloped. Particle sizes of the microcapsules were influenced by the concentration ofEudragit and stirring speed. From the results of the in vitro study shows that the desiredrelease rate is achieved by the combination of Eudragit RL and Eudragit RS.
