ФУНКЦИИ ГЕОГРАФИЧЕСКИХ НАИМЕНОВАНИЙ

Abstract
The article examines how, within the framework of the cognitive and anthropocentric directions of linguistics, new facets are revealed in studies of toponymy. The path of consolidation in the consciousness of the ethnos and the formation of various geographical names dates back to antiquity. It is directly connected with the development of a certain society of people. In every stratum of an immeasurable path of development of an ethnos-nation lies such spiritual and material wealth as the way and way of life, the culture of the life of the people. And if one important part of this culture is made up of geographical names, then their ancient layer is a richness of history, in which are kept many secrets of the ethnos. Anthropocentric principle, linking several directions of linguistic research, is the main direction in the study of various diverse functions, the linguistic and cultural essence of linguistic units in conjunction with a person - a representative of a certain ethnic community.
