Abstract
Siedlce Garrison played a vital role in maintaining military security in the time of II Republic of Poland from the moment of regaining independence until its loss in 1939, constituting an important road and railway junction. There were sever-al military formations created in Siedlce on the basis of the then existing Polish Mili-tary Organisation, units of Polish Armed Forces and voluntary conscription. After the disarmament of the Germans in Siedlce, on the 25th of November 1918, under the order of the Ministry of Military Affairs, a formation of an infantry regiment was commenced. The unit was initially called Siedlce regiment, and later referred to under the number of 22. The first commander of the regiment was Colonel Wacław Pażuś, who also performed a function of the commander of Siedlce Military District. In January 1919, when the 22 nd regiment of infantry was dispatched to the front line, a reserve battalion was formed in the Siedlce casern. Soon Captain Stanisław Bier-nacki assumed the role of its commander, and later he also became commander of the whole garrison. After the termination of military operations, the 9th division of infantry to-gether with the 22nd regiment of infantry were deployed to the region of Mołodec-zna near Vilnus. In September 1922, after four years since its formation, the regiment returned to Siedlce. On the 8th of September 1922 9th regiment of heavy artillery was also stationed in the garrison (1st Division in Brest). A few days later there came to Siedlce the commander of 9th division of infantry, Colonel Mieczysław Trojanowski, with the command and staff of the division. In place of the old military administra-tive division of the state into Commands of General Distiricts there were created Commands of Local Corps, and the 9th division of infantry with all its dependent regiments were part of IX Command of Local Corps in Brest on the Bug River. Even-tually in the interwar period the following military units and military offices were located in Siedlce: Command and Staff of 9th division of infantry, 22nd regiment of infantry, 9th regiment of heavy artillery (until 1933), 9th regiment of light artillery (since 1933), Regional Headquaters for Reserves, Regional Equine Inspectorate, Re-gional Military Court, Local Commission for Military Training nr 22, 9th platoon of
