Giant calculi of the excretory duct of the submandibular salivary gland – case report
Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2013, Vol 66, Issue 1
Abstract
Although sialolithiasis is one of the most common diseases of the salivary glands, giant salivary gland calculi (GSGC) have rarely been described inliterature. Calculi may occur in each type of salivary gland of the head and neck, but submandibular gland is the most susceptible to the disease. In this report, the case of a large sialolith measuring 21 mm in length and 12 mm in width is described. The stone was classified as a giant sialolith of the salivary gland. However, the patient showed none of the symptoms typical for this condition. Occlusal radiography revealed a stone which was then surgically removed through a longitudinal incision into the Wharton’s duct in the floor of the mouth. Further treatment of the patient was carried out without any complications.
