Historical-geographical researches in Western Ukraine in the 1920-1930

Abstract

The article analyzes the development of historical geography in Western Ukraine in the interwar period. From November 1918 until September 1939 Lviv University was known as Jan Kazimierz University in honour of its founder King John II Casimir Vasa and was one of the largest academic center in the Polish Second Republic. Article analyzes achievements of scientific schools of the Jan Kazimierz University in the historical geography. There were such famous professors as geographer E. Romer, historians F. Bujak and J. Ptasnik. Described master’s work and doctoral thesis defended in 1920-1930 in which studied historical problems. These works are prepared by historians and geographers. Ukrainian scientists had no right to work in the Lviv University. They taught in Lviv (secret) Ukrainian University, Lviv Theological Academy, in the grammar schools. The activities of the Shevchenko Scientific Society were important for the development of historical-geographical researches. M. Korduba and I. Krypiakevych is one of the most talented followers of M. Hrushevsky important area of research which was historical geography. The most of historical-geographical works were published as individual brochure or in notes of the Shevchenko Scientific Society. Thanks to M. Korduba’s initiative, study of early texts commission of the Shevchenko Scientific Society began preparation of «Geographical vocabulary of Halychyna and Bukovyna». I. Krypiakevych is the author of many historical maps. Some historical maps were created by S. Tomasevski, O. Terlecki, R. Zubyk and some other authors
