HISTORY OF TRANSLATIONS OF FEDERICO GARCIA LORCA’S WORKS IN UKRAINE AND ABROAD
Journal Title: Науковий вісник Херсонського державного університету. Серія: “Лінгвістика” - Year 2018, Vol 34, Issue 2
Abstract
The article analyzes the history and problems of translations of Federico Garcia Lorca in Ukraine, Europe and the USA. It mentioned the first Ukrainian translations of Lorca's poetry belonging to Nikolay Ivanov, which were published in the Literary magazine (Kharkov) in 1940. The first separate edition of the works of Lorca was the collection “Chosen by Garcia Lorca, Poetry, Prose, Drama” by Igor Kostetsky’s publishing house “On the Mountain” in 1958. Subsequently, probably the most famous collection of translated Lorca’s poems by Nikolay Lukash appeared in Ukraine, which was published in 1969. In his interpretation, Lukash is going in a new, independent way. The folklore basis of Lorca's poetry prompted him to look for stylistic matches in our folk-song tradition, because he is more oriented towards folklore than all his predecessors, both Ukrainian and Russian. Article analyzed translations of Lorca into English, made in the United States, where interest in this author is special, the reason for which is mainly the name of the collection of poems "The Poet in New York." It is noted that the first translators of this collection were A.L. Lloyd (1938), Stefan Spender and J. L. Gili, who published a collection of Lorca's selected poems in 1943, but before them, in 1940, one of Lorca’s most prominent translators, Rolf Humphries, published the first translation of The Poet in New York". The world experience of translating Lorca’s works indicates that there is still no unambiguous approach to the translation of his works.
