Abstract

The fish fauna composition was investigated in the Motława River system by the electrofishing method from August to October 2010. A total of 6196 fish and lampreys individuals representing 31 species were captured in 57 sampling sites. The most common (63.2%) and most abundant (21.5%) species was brown trout. Pike, gudgeon, three-spined stickleback (43.9% each), bullhead (42.1%) and brook lamprey (40.4%) were also relatively common. Beside brown trout, only the abundance of bullhead was high (12.6%). In the Motława River, mainly limnophilic and eurytopic species were noted. In many rapid, natural-streambed segments of other streams, high abundance of rheophils, mainly brown trout, bullhead and brook lamprey was recorded. Despite a good quality of many segments for lithophil spawning grounds (e.g. the Radunia and Kłodawa), the disappearance of migratory fish was observed as a consequence of dams that have recently been constructed. Also poverty of fish, especially of rheophilic species, was observed, mainly in regulated and isolated stretches. The occurrence of alien round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) in the lower Radunia River was registered following a severe stream water pollution. The development of the City of Gdańsk and other localities, constitutes a threat to the fish and lamprey fauna in the investigated area because of stream regulation.
