Identity of a potential migrant and migratory identity: formation and corresponding practices

Abstract

The article is devoted to the issues of formation of the identity of a potential migrant and migratory identity. These types of identity are regarded as elements of sociocultural identity of a person (potentially) involved in migration processes. The authors are investigating how the identity of a potential migrant is influenced by the values, value orientations associated with staying (short-term or long-term) in other countries and emigration attitudes. This identity can be embodied in the actions and practices associated with migration. Migration identity, in turn, is based on actions and practices that indicate involvement in the migration process and arise from migration; besides, it is also based on values, value orientations and migration attitudes as well as the identity of a potential migrant. This type of identity is embodied, in particular, in actions and practices such as mutual visits and communication with relatives/friends from the country of origin, the transfer of money/goods to the country of origin, communication with other migrants, membership of migrant organisations in the destination country. Consequently, identity is generally considered in its two-way connection with actions and practices. The authors analyse the results of a quantitative survey conducted in September 2017, as well as the results of qualitative research studies conducted in the period from 2008 to 2016 with the participation of authors.
