Incidence of peripheral vascular disease in diabetic foot ulcer patients

Journal Title: Medpulse International Journal of Surgery - Year 2017, Vol 4, Issue 2

Abstract

Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is one of the recognised diabetic micro and macro vascular complications. It is a marker of generalised systemic atherosclerosis and is closely associated with symptomatic coronary and cerebrovascular disease, hence significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study is to determine the incidence of PAD in adult diabetic patients. T2D patients with PAD are at increased risk of morbidity and mortality from cardiovascular diseases. This is a prospective analytical study. Patients with diabetic foot aged above 18 years and Patients who have undergone arterial Doppler study are included in this study. Statistical tests were carried out using S.P.S.S software. From this study it is noted that the total number of patients in age >60 years is less, presence of PVD is comparatively more in this age group (20 of 32 patients) than in patients 41-60 years of age 25 of 58 patients. Patient with long standing diabetics have high incidence of PVD. PVD was more in patients who had duration of diabetes for more than 5 years. Number of vessels involved was also been noticed in this study. 26 patients (51%) had involvement of two distal lower limb vessels, 39patients 19% had single vessel involvement. This study concluded that the incidence of PVD is more with diabetic patient with long standing history of diabetic mellitus. So all patient with diabetic foot ulcer and long standing diabetic should be evaluated for PVD.
