Influence of endodontic irrigating solutions incorporating 10% ascorbic acid on the roughness of coronal dentine

Journal Title: Journal of Stomatology (Czasopismo Stomatologiczne) - Year 2016, Vol 69, Issue 2

Abstract

Introduction. Chemical irrigants used during endodontic therapy influence the physicochemical properties of dentine, including such surface characteristics as roughness. NaOCl as a strong oxidant adversely affects the adhesive bonding of coronal reconstructions. It is believed that ascorbic acid, thanks to its antioxidant activity, may change the negative influence of oxidants by restoring the redox potential of the modified substrate. However, it is not currently known how its application affects surface roughness. Aim of the study. To evaluate surface roughness of dentine treated with endodontic irrigants containing 10% ascorbic acid. Materials and methods. Fifteen samples with exposed dentinal surface were sunk in acrylic blocks. After randomization to three groups, each group (n=5) was subjected to the following treatment: Control group – distilled water; Group I – NaOCl, EDTA, NaOCl, distilled water; Group II – NaOCl, EDTA, NaOCl, distilled water, ascorbic acid, distilled water. Surface roughness was assessed with the use of profilometer and evaluated basing on the analysis of Ra, Rz and Rq parameters. Results. There were statistically significant differences in the values of the Ra, Rz and Rq parameters (expressed in μm) between Group I and the control group, and between Group II and the control group (p<0.001). No statistically significant differences were found in studied variables between Group I and II (p>0.05). Conclusion. Currently recommended irrigation protocol with the use of NaOCl and EDTA clearly increased surface roughness of coronal dentine. The addition of 10% ascorbic acid into the protocol did not affect the dentine roughness.
