Italian historiography of the Catholic Church in social and political life of Italy (1943–1962)

Abstract
The article deals with the Іtalian historiography on the issues of the role and place of the Catholic Church in the political life of Italy for the period 1943–1962 (since the fall of Mussolini’s regime prior to the Second Vatican Council). There are such areas of Іtalian historiography considered, as a catholic, directed mainly to the study of issues related to the history of the Church and the Catholic movement; liberal, based on the principle of secularism and the existence of «two parallels» – the church and the state, which, acting in different fields, should never face; and a marxist, which was characterized by a sharp criticism of the church. The peculiarities of the development of the Іtalian historiography on this topic at the present stage are analized: at a time when there appears a large amount of researches devoted to the study of the Catholic world, secular Catholic movements, local self-government in certain areas and regions of Italy, etc. At the end of the article the conclusion was done that this is relevant to encourage further study of issues related to the activities of the Catholic Church in the modern world.
