Abstract
The Czech and Slovak post-communist cities undergo a dynamic transforma - tion since the beginning of the 1990s. Suburbanisation, as one of the most significant transformation processes, has been assessed, evaluated and classified in the following study. The first part deals with social-political and economic conditions in Czech and Slovak Republic after 1989 in relation to residential function. Spatial distribution, intensity and character of new suburban growth in the hinterland of selected cities has been identified and compared in the second part of the contribution. Finally, the article offers certain classification, evaluation and typology of suburban types within the research areas of Prešov and Olomouc.
