LAUGHTER CULTURE IN “EVENINGS NEAR THE VILLAGE OF DIKANKA” BY M. HOHOL THROUGH FOREIGN LANGUAGE DISCOURSE

Abstract

The article deals with the national features of laughter culture in «Evenings near the village of Dikanka» by M. Hohol through the prism of foreign language discourse. The translation techniques of adequate reproduction of the funny effect, as well as the preservation of the content of the text and the author’s manner of narration are revealed. The laughter culture of «Evenings near the village of Dikanka» is primarily connected with the Ukrainian traditional farce. Amusing characters and carnival types of the characters, motives for welding, beatings, curses, courtship, violations of various rules, dresses and mysticisms, funny tricks – all this and a lot of other comic were reflected in the above-mentioned stories by M. Hohol. When interpreting these comic expressions in other language, there are some difficulties, because it is necessary to take into account the individual characteristics of each of them. In addition, they are inseparable from the context and completely depended on it. The task of the translator is to adequately recreate in the foreign language discourse not only the funny effect, but also to preserve the content of the text and the author’s manner of story. Еach of the interpretations, despite the slight flaws, showed how the word of the original finds its variant outside the dictionary. In both translations, both stylistic and literary features of Hohol text in general and Hohol laughter in particular were revealed.
