LEXICAL METAPHOR IN TRANSLATION STUDIES (BASED ON CURRENT MASS MEDIA MATERIALS)

Abstract

The article raises an issue of translation of occasional metaphors functioning in modern Ukrainian mass media language into English. There has been developed an algorithm of translating figures of speech and a model of analysis and translation of occasional metaphors that includes the following stages: 1) identification of the most important components of its meaning: figurative or indirect component; direct component that makes the foundation of the image; emotional component; pragmatic component; ethnic component; 2) identification of the cognitive foundation of the metaphor; 3) analysis of the «transparency» of the image in the original language and the means to reproduce it in translation to provide adequate understanding of the figurative meaning; 4) identification of the pragmatic foundation of the metaphor to specify its dominant function; 5) specification of the way of translation to preserve the dominant component of the meaning and the dominant function of the metaphor. The specific way to translate an occasional metaphor is loan translation. In the process of translating there were also used lexical-grammatical transformations, generalization, concretization and modulation that inevitably caused a partial loss of figurative power. Under the circumstances the priority was to preserve the dominant function of an occasional metaphor at the expense of secondary ones.
