Abstract
The article offers a discussion of the explanatory potential of different theories applied in social sciences in order to provide descriptions and interpretations of intercultural relations. Drawing on the three-dimensional theory of location and author's own categorisation of the problem of culture clash, the author presents an approach which is an attempted compromise between the opposite theoretical perspectives: the universalist ones adopting a generalized outlook, and those that focus on a particular spatial and temporal setting and limit the results of research only to particular cases of cultural contact under consideration
