Abstract
The study of the conflict in Eastern Ukraine needs to expand the heuristic boundaries and overcome one-sided approaches. In this article, an attempt is made to see the confrontation in the Donbas in the context of the development of civil society in Ukraine, considering the establishment of peace as an important goal of the end of the conflict. The study suggests that mobilizing civil society can become a factor in overcoming the contradictions in the Ukrainian society. To understand the causes of the conflict, the concept of «conflict ethos» is used, in particular with regard to events on the Maidan 2013-2014. Polarization of society is also considered within the earlier period of the 2000s. The perspectives of the peace movement in Ukraine are outlined according to the views of its activists, which was researched through a survey conducted.
