Morphological comparison of utricles and nuts of the genus Carex (Cyperaceae) in Northeast of Iran

Abstract
The Carex genus and its tribe Cariceae is well recognizable from other cyperaceous members by the possession of mostly unisexual flowers and a perigynium or utricle which originates from prophyll and has flask-like structure. In the Carex, characters of utricle such as shape, size, nervation and texture could be useful and taxonomically reliable for identification purposes. In this study we investigated morphology of utricles and nuts of the Carex species by using light microscopy as well as SEM microscopy of nutlet surface in Northeast of Iran, including C. diluta, C. distans, C. pachystylis, C. physodes, C. sylvatica, C. songorica, C. melanostachya, C. halleriana, C. divisa, C. divulsa,and C. cuprina.Morphological characters of utricles and nuts could support identification of 11 Carex species in the area under study. The micromorphological study of fruit epidermal silica body partly revealed discrimination among the species. The significant differences are more obvious among closely related species than those with distantly related at the sectional levels.
