МОВНА ТАКТОВНІСТЬ ТА ЇЇ РОЛЬ У ФОРМУВАННІ СОЦІАЛЬНОЇ КОМПЕТЕНТНОСТІ (НА ПРИКЛАДІ ЗАХІДНОЇ КУЛЬТУРИ)

Abstract
У статті обгрунтовується необхідність опанування стратегії політкоректності на заняттях англійської мови у вищих навчальних закладах, а також пропонується низка рекомендацій щодо формування навиків компетентної взаємодії у мультикультурному соціумі. Значну увагу приділено висвітленню новітніх тенденцій у розвитку міжкультурного спілкування. The paper follows the latest research on political correctness. Close attention is paid to style manuals, textbooks, universities’ guidelines, and media publications in English, covering the usage of politically correct expressions. Relying on the mentioned sources, the most commonly described means of polite discourse were selected for university learning instructions This choice was guided by the practical value of politically correct lexical and grammar equivalents which enables conflict-free interactions in a multicultural society. Along with the means of Gender, Ethnic, Racial, Occupational and other identifications, a number of writing style changes are discussed. Admitting the reasonable and good-natured character of the changes, we share today’s spread opinion that in some cases, common sense and stylistic expressiveness are sacrificed for the sake of political correctness. Even widely-known idioms, such as Dutch treat, Welsh on a deal / a bet, Indian summer, are subjected to censorship as insensitive, divisive, and able to hurt the national pride of some people. Due to the ongoing concern of the Western society about the impact of intolerant language on representatives of unprivileged and marginalized communities, the term «microaggressions» is compared to the concept «political correctness». As a fairly new development, the term «microaggressions» emphasizes the repetitive nature of unintentional and intentional offenses, slurs, comments rooted in the mainstream culture stereotypes and diehard prejudices. The examples of microaggressions from the English language media and research literature demonstrate the extent of the problem confronting literally every social group. Through online communication venues, such as the website of Microaggressions Project and its Facebook and Twitter accounts, the subjects of discrimination share their negative life experiences, their expectations for an inclusive and tolerant society, and try to influence public attitudes towards their community. Such projects deepen understanding of political correctness with regard to its complexity and relevance. In order to improve students’ social competence, in-class activities should widen their outlook, develop their ability to identify potential conflicts, and stimulate their interest in both native and foreign cultures. Discussing current media publications on cultural diversity, biographies of famous civil rights movement activists, political and cultural figures who fought against discrimination and oppression provides the basis for pointed learning of grammar and vocabulary. It is recommended to familiarize students with political correctness issues at the intermediate level of language proficiency. In-class activities should cover a broad range of stylistically distinctive vocabulary, proving a communicative significance of tactful means.
