NAME SYMBOLISM AND THE BULGARIAN TRANSLATIONS OF TERRY PRATCHETT’S DISCWORLD CHARACTERS

Journal Title: World Science - Year 2017, Vol 2, Issue 8

Abstract

The article tackles the issue of translating symbolic names from English into Bulgarian. The analysis is based on ten names of recurrent characters in Terry Pratchett’s Dicworld series. The analysis is undertaken along the lines of classical philological investigation and involves two major steps: an intellectual and a linguistic phase. The first involves detailed research of the meaningful units in Pratchett’s original text and especially of those semanic elements relating to the individual’s character’s features. The second phase discusses the established translation in Bulgarian by exploring the semantic and social adequacy of the accepted translation equivalents. In the conclusions three cases are isolated: inevitable full or partial loss of meaning, and avoidable loss, caused when the techniques of transcription or transliteration are applied. In general, it can be suggested that symbolic (or speaking names) should be always translated or at worst explained in a footnote.
