Natural Arteries of Isfahan the Give Identity to this City

Abstract
Isfahan is a city with primary biological cores and Jooybareh (that means the land of flowing rivulets) was the main core of the city with a special historical position. This historical background is indebted to Zayande Rood that has caused fertile lands and farms to appear in that region. The role of Zayande Rood and the streams (madies) ramified from it has been very important for agriculture and water conveyance, collecting surface water, and city development. Unfortunately, due to the city development and the increase of constructions as well as the destruction of the gardens inside the city and the farms around it, some part of the city identity, namely madi (stream), was forgotten. The necessity of taking the revival of the madies into consideration and investing in it is worth investigating from the various historical, environmental, urban designing and economic viewpoints. This paper deals with recognizing background and function of the madies during the history and also their relationship with urban space design and development. The main objectives of this study are to retain identification-historical values of the madies, beautify the urban spaces by promoting the passing role of the madies through the greenways, and meet functional, entertaining, spiritual and mental needs of the citizens in order to improve the urban life quality.
