НАВЧАННЯ ШЕСТИРІЧНИХ УЧНІВ ТЕХНІКИ ЧИТАННЯ АНГЛІЙСЬКОЮ МОВОЮ

Abstract
Nowadays knowing a foreign language in early years is essential thus some Ukrainian authors summarize previous researches on teaching reading skills, while others provide some technics how to teach young learners. However, studies help little to clarify the problem as some papers report little details to be conclusive, others are loosely controlled that the results are uncertain. Moreover, researchers focused on different age groups, studied different methods of teaching reading skills, and teaching Phonics is often omitted. Purpose. In our previous findings we have examined teaching Phonics to Ukrainian primary schoolchildren, and the present article is aimed at presenting our research in this field, as there is a need of reliable and solid papers. Methods. The study was methodologically driven by qualitative and quantitative analysis. Results. The paper is focused on the problem of forming competence in reading skills while teaching six-year-old schoolchildren, theoretical substantiation and practical elaboration of the methodology of forming competence in reading skills in English by means of Phonics. The theoretical, psychological, methodological, and didactic premises of forming competencehave been taken into account. The structure and content of the competence in teaching reading skills in English have been determined and developed. As a result of the research, some methods of teaching reading skills have been investigated and the relevance of teaching Phonics to six-year-old Ukrainian schoolchildren was proved. Additionally, certain type of images has been selected for illustrating letters and words. Conclusion. There are many issues to be investigated in further studies to gain better understanding of better Phonics teaching and the research is an attempt to implement Phonics into primary school curriculum.
