A Mini-Review on the Importance, Prevalence, Origins and Management of Sexual Dysfunction among Chronic Renal Failure Patients Undergoing Hemodialysis Therapy
Journal Title: Caspian Journal of Applied Sciences Research - Year 2012, Vol 1, Issue 10
Abstract
A high percentage of chronic renal failure (CRF) patients under hemodialysis treatment suffer from sexual dysfunction. This disorder has negative effects on the health and quality of life. Herein, a short review on the importance, prevalence rates, causes and management of sexual dysfunction in CRF patients receiving hemodialysis is provided. As a multifactorial phenomenon, sexual dysfunction in CRF patients has its roots on a variety of organic and psychogenic causes. Despite the globally high prevalence of sexual dysfunction in CRF patients, only a small fraction of them seek to receive consultation and treatment. The provision of sex healthcare services is impeded by several factors, faced by medical doctors and patients. Thus, the screening, diagnosis, and management of sexual dysfunction are of utmost importance in the improvement of health and life quality of CRF patients.
