Journal Title: The Annals of Valahia University of Târgoviste, Geographical Series - Year 2005, Vol 5, Issue 2
Abstract
Situated in the South-West of Romania, at about 60 km far from the Danube, 100 km from the Carpathians and 250 km from the Black Sea, the city of Bucharest stretches along an area of 228 km2 plus another 365 km2 that represents the metropolitan area. Bucharest has all the characteristics of a metropolis – 2 millions inhabitants (with a population density 36 inhabitants/hectare). It represents the political, economic, administrative and cultural center of the country, having an obvious tendency to go to the Western Cities in all its aspects. The capital is also the first and most direct promoter of the Romanian image to the visitors. Due to its dimensions – at least 5 times bigger than any other Romanian city - and also to its status of Capital City, the administration of town services rises special issues whose solving requires special means and structures.
