Abstract
The article outlines some peculiarities of pastoral modality and pastoral transtext of the English literature. A problem of development, modification and transformation of the major components of pastoral modality in the transtext of the English literature has been raised. It is taken into account that pastorality, acquiring additional meanings, has preserved its recognizable semantic core. Investigating the stated issue, the special attention has been paid to the literature of antiquity as the source of pastoral modality. The Renaissance flourishing of the pastoral as well as the evolution of its main elements in the system of genres of the English literature from XVII till XX centuries is being under consideration.
