ON THE PROBLEM OF UKRAINE-AND-RUSSIAN LEXICAL BORROWINGS IN ODESSA REGION

Journal Title: Слов’янський збірник - Year 2014, Vol 0, Issue 18

Abstract

This article deals with lexical borrowings from the Ukrainian language in Russian emigrant dialects of Odessa region. For a long time (over 200 years) the stock of words of Russian island dialects was increased by lexical borrowings from the neighbor language and the dialects of the Ukrainian people, it happened because of isolation from the southern Russian vocabulary. Ukrainian borrowings get into all groups of domestic and agricultural vocabulary as well as into lexicon connected with nature, plants and animals. Ukrainian words were adopted during the period of examining the new phenomena, which the Russian migratory groups were not familiar with. It is the so called „cultural adoption”. The Russian migratory groups borrowed the Ukrainian vocabulary differentiating some general concepts from Russian dialects. Some Ukrainian words were apprehended because they serve as names of concepts which in Russian are expressed as word-combinations. Sometimes the Ukrainian borrowings were initiated by their great expressiveness in comparison with Russian equivalents. The majority of lexical borrowings from the Ukrainian language into the Russian dialects of Odessa region are clarified by the genetic relationship of two East Slavonic nations, their old tradition of cultural communication and intensive development of the Russian-and-Ukrainian bilinguism. The influence of the closely-related language on the vocabulary of the Russian island dialects of Odessa region has many angles. It includes the following aspects: the Ukrainian language helps to preserve the south Russian lexicon common to the Ukrainian one, to penetrate many Ukrainian literary and dialect words of nominative and expressive fund into the active vocabulary of the Russian island dialects, to change semantic meanings of some southern Russian words, to generate a considerable layer of doublet and synonymous rows in the Russian island dialects. The Russian island dialects of Odessa region are phenomena of linguistic, ethnographical and cultural relations. They are most interesting for linguists, historians, ethnographers, specialists in culture and folklore.
