Peculiarities of functioning of pine stands of Pridneprovsky Northern Steppe of Ukraine

Abstract

Introduction It is known that extremely adverse conditions for the growth of woody plant are formed in the Steppe. Not many species are able to adapt to the complex stress that this natural area is characterized by. Pinus sylvestris L. is known for its high resistance. The aim of the research was the analysis of the current state of pine stands of Pridneprovsky Northern Steppe for its major forest biometric indices. Materials and Methods The objects of the study were pine stands in Pridneprovsky Northern Steppe within the Dnipropetrovsk region. The research of forestry and biometric characteristics of pine stands was carried out using data from the subcompartment database of Ukrainian State Design and Forest Management Production Association “Ukrderzhlisproekt” and conventional methods in forest estimation. The following characteristics of pine stands were the subject of analysis: forest type, composition, the age of plantations, medium height and diameter, total stock, site class and relative stand density. Results The total area of pine plantations is 21472.9 hectares with a total stock of 4571.1 thousand m3 in Pridneprovsky Northern Steppe. Pine stands of natural origin grow on the 3693.8 ha area, while forest plantations of this breed occupy 17779.1 hectares, that is in accordance with 82.8 % of the total area of pine stands. For pine stands studied region is observed the prevalence of middle-aged plantations - 58.5%, and young-aged stands that occupy 32.7 % of the stands of this species. The average age of the dominant group is 60, young-aged stands is 23 years with average stocks 292 and 92 m3∙ha-1. Pure forest stands of pine are functioning in the area of 17 578 hectares. With the formation of mixed stands of pine with the coefficient of composition 3-9, their area is less than each of the 5 %. Stands of pine are being formed in 17 edatops – А0-3, В1-4, С0-4, D0-3. In the studied region dry and fresh hygrotops are superior and are respectively 41.1 and 56.5 % and ⅔ of its area are concentrated in fairly infertile pine site type conditions. It can be considered that pine plantations are high productivity because of the intensity of growth. Given species grows for І site class and higher by class M. Orlov on an area of 11183 hectares, which occupies 52.1 %. Distribution of areas of Scots pine on the density showed that it forms stands of high density. Given samples are situated on ~ ½ of the area (11778,6 ha) and form stands high density. Conclusions Area of forest stands with pine of Pridneprovsky Northern Steppe occupies 21472 ha with the total stock of wood is 4571.1 m3. The vast majority of pine stands for their age structure are middle-aged of the studied region. It is with the largest representation in IV-VI class age. The distribution coefficient indicates a significant dominance of pure stands for participation pine plantations consisting. The pine forests were mainly formed by conditions of fairly infertile pine site type, dry and fresh hygrotops in the studied area. The largest area of species that has been analyzing are occupied by stands of I and higher site class. Stands of Pinus sylvestris have high degree of density at ~ ½ of the area, while only 10 % of the area of pine forests are understocked plantations and woodlands.
