Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2008, Vol 24, Issue 6

Abstract

Background. The objective of the study was to assess physical activity of adults aged 60-69 years.Material and methods. 91 respondents (56 women and 35 men) aged 60-69 years were qualified for the study. The environmental survey was used to collect information on self-evaluation of one, physical activity and fitness, regularity and frequency of sport-recreational exercises performed weekly, time devoted to physical activity and forms of activity. General fitness of the respondents was estimated by the selected Eurofit trials for: strength (table press ups), power (jump and reach exercise), agility (bend forward from sitting position, legs straight) and endurance (fast marching, 2 km distance, time limited).Results. The analysis showed statistically significant differentiation within frequency and time devoted to recreational exercises during a week. Women led more active life style than men. Walking, gymnastics (49% women) and riding a bike (28,6% men) were forms of physical activity preferred by the respondents. Both men and women undertook physical activity to improve their health and physical conditions. Tests used to evaluate general fitness of the respondents revealed that men obtained better results in strength and power test, whereas women were more agile and had better results in endurance tests. The majority of women (51,8%) presented average endurance level, whereas in men (48,6%) this level was below average. The obtained differences are statistically significant.Conclusions. Regular and systematic physical activity should become an integral part of our lifestyle. It is essential in case of elderly people. Low physical activity level in males is a risk factor for the development of civilization- related diseases.
