Protective effect of Brazilian propolis ethanol extract against stress-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats. Its evaluation using oxidative stress markers
Journal Title: Journal of Analytical Bio-Science - Year 2011, Vol 34, Issue 2
Abstract
We evaluated the protective effect of Brazilian propolis ethanol extract (BPEE) against gastric mucosal lesions in rats with water-immersion restraint stress (WIRS) using oxidative stress markers. Exposure of Wistar rats to 6 h of WIRS caused lesion development, increased lipid peroxide (LPO) and NOx concentrations and xanthine oxidase and myeloperoxidase activities, and decreased non-protein SH, ascorbic acid, and vitamin E concentrations in the gastric mucosa. Pre-administration of BPEE (10, 50 or 100 mg/kg, p.o.) prevented the lesion development by the following order: 50 mg/kg > 100 mg/kg > 10 mg/kg. Each dose of BPEE attenuated the increased xanthine oxidase activity and the decreased non-protein SH concentration. BPEE (50 mg/kg) attenuated the increased LPO and NOx concentrations and the decreased ascorbic acid and vitamin E concentrations. BPEE (100 mg/kg) attenuated the increased LPO concentration. These results suggest that BPEE protects against WIRS-induced gastric mucosal lesions in rats through its antioxidant properties.

Whole blood concentration of thiamine diphosphate requires correction for red blood cell count in the nutritional assessment of thiamine status
This study examined whether the whole blood (WB) concentration of thiamine diphosphate (TDP) needed to be corrected for hemoglobin concentration (Hb) or red blood cell (RBC) count. TDP levels in whole blood (WB TDP) and...
Seven-year large cohort study for the association of serum albumin level and aging among community dwelling elderly
This study was done to clarify the association of serum albumin and aging in community-dwelling independent elderly aged 65 and over. Subjects were 36,674 people who had had a basic health examination at least one time f...
Mild acid hydrolysis of sphingolipids yields lysosphingolipids: a matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry study
The mechanisms underlying the generation of lysosphingolipids remain unclear. The present study investigated whether sphingolipids can be de-N-acylated under relatively mild acidic conditions to produce lysosphingolipids...
Reference range study in a neuron-specific enolase (NSE) assay
Neuron-specific enolase (NSE) is widely used as a marker of small-cell lung cancer. Upper reference range for total plasma NSE level in adults is usually 12.0 ng/mL, as arranged by the manufacturer of the measurement kit...
