Psychopathy, diagnosis and treatment

Abstract

Introduction: psychopathy is a personality construct that has generated fascination, controversy, and social alarm throughout history, both in the population and in healthcare professionals. Objective: to characterize psychopathy, its diagnosis, and treatment. Methods: a bibliographic review was carried out using a total of 24 bibliographies from the Scielo, PubMed, and Google Scholar databases. The selection criterion was the most recently published literature in accordance with the novelty of this disorder.  Development: pathological lying, impulsivity, violence, and seduction are characteristic of psychopaths, who manipulate and satisfy their needs without creating attachment or guilt for their actions. Psychopathy has significant social implications as it encompasses different disciplines - psychology, psychiatry, law, and even medicine - depending on the magnitude of its effects. This presents difficulties in diagnosing and treating individuals.  Conclusions: psychopathy as a personality disorder remains a difficult topic to study due to its interdisciplinary nature. A psychopath can only be identified through multiple diagnostic tests. The development of intervention and prevention models is a primary objective in the study and management of psychopathy, although the use of psychotropic drugs can also improve this condition.
