Quality of Antibiotics Use in Patients with Digestive Surgery in Hospital in Bandung City

Abstract
Rational use of antibiotics may affected by drug prescription with an appropriate indications, proper dosage, duration of administration of a drug, appropriate drug delivery interval, safe, and affordable by the patient. The aim of this study was to determine the quality of antibiotic used in patients with digestive surgery at a hospital in Bandung City in July–December 2013. This was a retrospective descriptive study from patient medical records with simple random sampling technique. The quality of antibiotics used were analyzed by the Gyssens method. The results showed that from 208 medical record analyzed, 2.9% of the prescription was categorized as rational. The rest of 97.1% was, however, categorized as irrational, this include the incorrect dosage (1.5%), incorrect intervals (0.3%), duration too long (2%), duration too short (0.3%), there were other more effective antibiotics (57.8%), and the use of antibiotics without indication (35.2%). Based on these results, the major reason of irrational antibiotics used was due to there were more effective antibiotics available for digestive surgery patients.
