Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2016, Vol 9, Issue 43
Abstract
Mehmed Aydi Efendi was a sufi poet with his own divan, who was from Antep and lived in the 19th Century. He advanced himself in the field of religious sciences in Antep, Aleppo, Kayseri and Istanbul. After completing Kusadali İbrahim Khalwati’s (d. 1846) spiritual education, he was assigned as a caliphate. It’s also clear that his mystical personality reflected on his poems. He emphasized many mystical concepts in Divan such as the importance of affiliation to a sheikh, silsila, sharia, tariqa, hakika, marifa, zuhd, taqwa, nafs, tawba and dhikr. Aydi Efendi referred to Qur’anic verses in almost all his poetry. This shows the competency in the field of religious sciences besides his mystical aspects. As a result, the content of Divan of Mehmed Aydi Efendi is very rich in terms of religious and mystical culture.
