Review of post-traumatic injuries in patients who received ambulatory emergency treatment

Abstract
Introduction: More and more people fall victims to road traffic accidents, sustain injuries at the workplace, or when participating in sports activities. According to many reports, many patients sustained trauma as a consequence of assaults, falls, or freak accidents. Aim of the study: To evaluate post-traumatic injuries in ambulatory patients who received emergency treatment for maxillofacial trauma.Material and methods: The study covered 232 ambulatory patients with maxillofacial injuries who were admitted on an emergency basis to the Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial and Oncological Surgery in Lodz in 2002. Results: The study comprised 170 males and 62 females. Most patients were below the age of 29 with assault being the most common cause of trauma.Conclusion: Post-traumatic facial injuries predominantly affected males. The most common type of trauma which did not require long-term hospitalization involved soft tissues.
