Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2017, Vol 10, Issue 50

Abstract

Molière’s work Le Tartuffe is – at first sight- about the things a bad hearted, fraud man who uses religion for his own good. Noble Orgon who receives him at his home believes that receiving him will bring peace and solidarity to home. However there is another group who knows that Tartuffe is a counterfeiter and a faker. A fight breaks sup. In the end, Tartuffe settles at Orgon’ home and receives his fortune and now is longing to possess his wife. With the help of Dorine, the housekeeper, Orgon sees the real face of Tartuffe. However, the play is not simply unmasking a faker. What Molière aims is to satirize the thought and religious ideas of church by means of Tartuffe, with the help of irony, hint and tragi-comical elements of comedy. Characters act as the representative of two worlds; a religion centered approach and secularism. In this article, it is aimed to show the satire to Tartuffe and the like with the help of humor – an elementMolière himself makes use of.
