Journal Title: Zeszyty Naukowe Akademii Sztuki Wojennej - Year 2009, Vol 2009, Issue 4
Abstract
In the internal sphere, Poland bases its security on three pillars, i.e. NATO membership, EU membership and strategic cooperation with the USA. In reference to NATO, the most important matter is to see to ensuring that the new strategic concept would reflect such issues as collective defence, responding to crisis situations when consensus is difficult to reach, including planning for every eventuality, NATO - EU cooperation, strategy towards Russia and the problem of further NATO enlargement, as well as strategy towards Afghanistan enabling getting free from a strategic trap there. In connection with the EU, Poland, as particularly interested in both the Euro-Atlantic ties and capabilities of complex (integrated) response to various symmetric and asymmetric threats, should initiate and promote setting up a systemic cooperation between NATO and the EU. Due to our strategic location and role in international organizations important for the USA (especially NATO and the EU), there appear possibilities and needs to develop and strengthen the cooperation with the USA, according to the "proportionalpartnership" doctrine. To sum up, it is Poland's interest to shape the allied environment so as all three external pillars of our national security, i.e. NATO, EU and USA, can function in a synchronized way complementing and strengthening each other. Building the Euro-Atlantic NATO - EU Security Tandem may appear the solely and particularly useful way leading to this goal.
