СПІЛЬНЕ ТА ВІДМІННЕ В РОМАНАХ «ТИХИЙ АМЕРИКАНЕЦЬ» Г. ГРІНА ТА «ЕЛЕМЕНТАЛ» В. ШКЛЯРА

Abstract
Статтю присвячено вивченню художньої проекції колоніальної політики як соціального, історичного та літературного феномену, представленого в романах українського письменника В. Шкляра й англійського прозаїка Г. Гріна, що дає змогу простежити типологічні збіги та відмінності в цих творах. Виділено стрижневу проблему творів обох письменників: тема національної ідентичності країн, які здобули незалежність від колишніх імперій у другій половині XX століття. З’ясовано сутність понять «антиколоніальний роман» та «постколоніальний» твір. The article is devoted to the investigation of the artistic transformation of colonial policy as a social, historial and literary phenomenon representatived in the novels «Elemental» of the Ukrainian writer V. Shklyar and «The Quiet American» of the English author G Greene. The core issue of the works of both writers is highlighted: the theme of the national identity of countries that gained independence from the former empires in the second half of the XX century. Also the essence of the concepts of «anticolonial novel» and «postcolonial»work of literature is found out in the article presented. «The Quiet American» (1955) depicts French colonialism in Vietnam being uprooted by the Americans during the 1950 s. The novel has received much attention due to its prediction of the outcome of the Vietnam War and subsequent American foreign policy. V. Shklyar’s «Elemental» (2001)is a modern adventure story, written on documentary facts, well-known to the author. The actions take place in France, Ukraine, Russia and Chechnya. A Ukrainian soldier of the French Foreign Legion receives a task to take out a general’s daughter from blocked Chechnya, whom Russian special services hunt for. Thanks to postcolonial studies elaborated by Z. Vanchura, S. Votchenko, O. Kornilova, M. Pavlyshyn, O. Plaushevska and others, in the anticolonial prose by above-mentioned English and Ukrainian writers the typological artistic structures have been traced. The study of the definitions such as colonialism, anti-colonialism, postcolonialism is one of the key issues of contemporary literary criticism. The interest of scientists is conditioned by the constant renewal of the representations of these terms. The author’s classification of the above categories is presented according to four criteria: by time, content, source of values, binary oppositions, cultural essence, the unity and interaction of which play an important role in this delineation. Besides, the typological common features are the following: the source of values; subject; approaching the depicted events; problem of choice which protagonists face. In conclusion, this study allows us to understand more deeply the ways of constructing a figurative picture of the writers’ worlds, to reveal the peculiarity of their concepts of existence, to understand the trends and regularities of the historical-artistic process of a particular period. Besides that, the authors of the article pointed out some common features of the novels: - the main determinants of these works are a personality, environment, public background; - against the backdrop of the key events of social life the protagonists face the problem of choice, which leads to the transformation of their previous outlook; - in the artistic world of the novels literary term «colonialism» has generalizing character. «The Quiet American» by G. Greenе is considered as an anticolonial work, while V. Shklar’s «Elemental» proves to be a post-colonial novel.
